|
| What varieties of flowers do you grow?
|
We grow around 30 named varieties of
freesia in four main colours - yellow,
red, blue and white.
Each cultivar has its own unique
characteristics but as a general rule the
vase life of red or pink freesia tends to be
shorter than the other colours while
blue freesia are slower to flower (and
more difficult to grow).
Most freesia have a beautiful scent
varying from the delicate to the intense.
The reds and yellows are more heavily
scented than the blues and whites.

|
| How do I care for the flowers I've ordered?
|
All our flowers are picked and
dispatched to order. Each stem leaves
the nursery in perfect condition, to
provide pleasure for up to two weeks.
You can lengthen the life of the flowers
by following these simple steps.
Immediately on arrival :
- remove flowers from box
- cut half an inch (10 mm) off the
end of each stem
- empty a sachet of flower food into
a vase and add water as instructed
on the packaging
- ensure that all stems sit in the
flower food solution
To ensure you get the best from your
flowers :
- keep them in a cool place out of
direct sunlight
- place the vase away from fresh
fruit (as it produces
naturally-occuring ethylene gas
which ages flowers prematurely)
- regularly remove dying flowers
- top-up the flower food solution as
necessary using the second sachet
- remove the pollen-laden stamens from lilies when they open as pollen can stain fabrics
By following these steps, you'll enjoy up
to two weeks of beautiful flowers and
fragrant scent.

| How are the flowers cultivated?
|
The Freesia is a South African winter
flowering plant. It is a member of the
Iridaceae family which includes the
more common gladioli and iris - the
species was "discovered" by a Dutch
botanist in the 19th century who named
it after a friend and colleague.
Most commercial freesia varieties have
been bred in Holland and Britain since
1945. They mainly have single flowers
but some doubles are available. The
crop has special growing requirements
under British conditions.
Prior to planting the corms need heat
treatment - 12 weeks at 30 degrees
celsius and 90% relative humidity - to
mimic the South African summer. They
grow best under damp conditions and
the young plants require a cool period -
4 weeks at under 15 degrees - for bud
initiation.
The production cycle varies seasonally
under English consitions. The corm can
be in the ground for as little as 5 months
from March planting to 9 months for
September planting.
Each corm can produce from 1 flower
(September planting) to 4 flowers
(March to May planting). Corm yields
vary by variety and season from 1-3 new
corms or cormlets for each corm
planted.
